ORB - Media Freedom

So a friend of mine turned me onto Orb. I installed a winTV PVR 350 TV Tuner and then installed Orb 2.0 and was up and running with TV anywhere. Orb can be an affordable alternative to SlingBox and it allows you to schedule TV program recording and also watch live TV. The MPEG-2 is about 2GB per hour of recording. You can then run a DivX converter to reformat the video to a smaller file size.

"There are several tools that convert DVR-MS to DivX. I have tried many and found one that i like a lot. This tool is called Dr. DivX. The latest version is free! Download it from this site: http://labs.divx.com/DrDivX. You might have to install the latest DivX codex as well. Download the free version here."

TV and Video Entertainment

How do you watch video entertainment? Do you watch standard TV, Internet TV, online videos or video-on-demand? Nowadays if I miss an episode of Survivor, then I can watch that episode on the Internet. The BBC has a cool article on how standard television viewing is decreasing due to the many options available for video entertainment. TVOver.net has a cool article as well on television and the Internet.

Movies & TV Shows on the XBOX 360

So if Gears of War doesn't bring you over to the XBOX 360, then maybe watching downloaded movies and TV shows will.

"On November 6, Microsoft Corp. announced agreements with CBS, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, Turner Broadcasting System Inc. (TBS Inc.), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to bring an initial lineup of more than 1,000 hours of hit television shows and movies to Xbox 360™ consoles in the U.S. by the end of the year. Additionally, Xbox 360 will be the first gaming console to bring standard and HD TV shows and movies to the customer via digital distribution over the Internet."

MovieLink - Downloadable Movies Site

I think we will see a lot more sites like this in the near future. Movie companies are going to have to move to this format to stay competitive...IMHO. ;-)

Video Glasses

Don't let me watch TV on glasses. That would be the ultimate way to travel.

BitTorrent and TV Shows

LifeHacker has a cool DIY hack attack on how to setup Ted (torrent episode downloader) to download TV shows.

"Note: Lifehacker doesn’t condone piracy. Downloading and distributing copyrighted material is illegal, so proceed at your own risk. Of course, if you decide to go on, you could check out a few top Azureus plug-ins, my favorite being SafePeer, or you could try setting up anonymous Azureus. No guarantees either of these methods will keep the FCC from hunting you down and skinnng your children alive to make a point about that pirated episode of Amazing Race, though."

George Denis Patrick Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008)

George Carlin passed away 06-22-2007, Sunday of heart failure at age 71. He was an American icon and will be missed.

Known as the guy who took black humor and beat the crap out of it, then introduced it to drugs and porn, and then took it around the country for a series of unbelievably insulting stand up shows, Carlin also left a footprint on the media. Having ridiculed television for the seven dirty words you can’t hear on TV (and getting arrested for obscenity several times), he reached unprecedented fandom on the Internet, where thousands of kids were delighted to hear the dirty old man telling it like it is.

Here’s a short selection of George Carlin’s best YouTube flicks. If you’re a fan, I know you’ll enjoy them; if you’re one of the uninitiated, well, better late than never.

XBOX 360 Elite

Sometimes it really hurts to be on the bleeding edge of gaming. That's part of the reason I switched from PC to console gaming. It was too expensive to stay updated with the latest and greatest hardware. Well now Microsoft has done it to me again. I buy the latest and greatest console they have to offer and they upped the ante with this XBOX 360 Elite. The main reason I would want to buy it is for the bigger HD and the HDMI connection.

  • "Xbox 360 Elite console: The Xbox 360 Elite is equipped with a premium black finish and three powerful core processors capable of producing the best in HD entertainment (up to 1080p, like any Xbox 360), 16:9 cinematic aspect ratio, anti-aliasing for smooth textures, full surround sound, HDMI output and DVD playback with upscaling capabilities right out of the box.
  • Xbox 360 120GB hard drive: The huge 120GB detachable hard drive allows gamers to save their games and store television shows, movies, music, pictures, trailers, extra game levels, demos and other content available from Xbox Live Marketplace.
  •  Xbox 360 Wireless Controller (black): The sleek black finish of this high-performance wireless controller matches the style of the Elite Console. It has a range of up to 30 feet and a battery life of 30 hours on two AA batteries.
  • Xbox 360 headset (black): Now available in black, the headset lets you strategize while playing together online or trade taunts with your opponents. You can also send voice messages to friends on Xbox Live.
  • Xbox 360 HDMIcable: New to Xbox 360, HDMI lets you get HD video (up to 1080p) and multichannel surround sound, all from one cable.
  • Xbox Live Silver Membership: With this, gamers can chat with friends online, collect achievements and gamerscores, send and receive voice and text messages, and access Xbox Live Marketplace content such as game demos, HD movies and TV, as well as the best in downloadable games from Xbox Live Arcade.
  • One-month subscription to Xbox Live Gold: An Xbox Live Gold Membership provides a complete online entertainment experience. Subscribe to this premium service and engage in competitive online multiplayer matches, tailor your matchmaking via feedback and accomplishments, chat with more than one person at a time, and take advantage of unique privileges in Xbox Live Marketplace and Xbox Live Arcade."
